Alexis arrived at St. Johns’ tutoring site on Monday afternoon with a big smile and hug for her tutor, Francine Pina-Council. Yes, she was hungry and got her snack, but even before that she picked up The Cat in the Hat and started reading out loud.
It is no wonder that Francine is excited and happy to be a tutor. After a long career in the Springfield Public School system, having served as Principal at Sumner Ave. and Rebecca Johnson schools, she was ready to retire and take time off from education. But caring for children is in her blood and after a 2 year break she was ready to return to “ give something back to the community. I’m about service” , she said.
Francine was no stranger to ACTS, having helped recruit students from Sumner Ave. School to join the Faith United Church site across the street from the school. Her good friend, Estelle Early, started tutoring at St. Johns last year and told Francine how much she enjoyed it, so she decided to give it a try. She loves that she is paired with only one student after looking after hundreds and finds great satisfaction in spending time with Alexis and being part of the ACTS family at St. Johns.
The best recruitment tool that ACTS has is having tutors who love their role and then recruit others to join them. Estelle was the recipient of Big Y gift certificates for recruiting 3 tutors. Thank you, Estelle, for increasing the ACTS family so that more children can be served!
