Time To Volunteer

ACTS is the ONLY one-to-one, faith based tutoring and mentoring program in Springfield. There is always a great need for caring adults. For each student to be enrolled, an adult needs to volunteer. Everyone needs to give back something, and giving friendship and academic help to an elementary student in Springfield makes a very big difference in that student’s life. Volunteers range from high school students to senior citizens. No experience is necessary. There is always a great need…

What Is Required Of Me?

The main requirement is that you are a compassionate person who wants to help kids success academically and socially. You need to be available for an average of two hours per week with your student during the school year. Being able to communicate effectively with children is one of the most important qualities our tutors have.

Each program has an experienced Site Director, who is there to provide the materials you and your student need, as well as guidance and support at every session. In addition, ACTS provides tutors with an orientation and training before, and during, the school year. Tutors are also provided with a handbook that contains helpful hints, written guidelines, and other important information.

To qualify to be a tutor, you need to:

  • Be 16 or older
  • Enjoy working with children
  • Make a commitment to the program for a minimum of 6 months (a 1 year commitment is encouraged)
  • Be able to provide your own transportation to/from the program location
  • Be available to attend trainings and willing to take instruction from the Site Director

Responsibilities of tutoring include:

  • Establishing a supportive and trusting relationship with your assigned student
  • Helping your student with their academic work, focusing on areas that need improvement
  • Completing periodic brief written evaluations of your student’s progress and needs
  • Communicating with your student’s parents/caregivers
  • Acting as a role model of kindness, empathy, confidence, and positivity
  • Working cooperatively with fellow tutors, Site Directors, and ACTS Staff
